01 Background

Inspiration

At first, we thought about making a game like a bit of nostalgia and a playable book. After an extended discussion around this theme, we found that textbooks, an object to accompany Chinese students through 9-year compulsory education, carry many memories, including the first understanding of a subject, the careless doodling in class, and the fantastic imagination of illustrations. All are very precious memories! The name Day Day Dream comes from an old Chinese saying Good Good Study, Day Day Up, which means study hard and improve everyday.

Target Player

  • Students who are learning related knowledge. We hope that children can benefit from the game levels that are both educational and interesting.
  • Adults who are nostalgic about school life. We hope to evoke some common memories of our school days through the design and various details of the game, and get nostalgic and pleasant emotional experiences from them.

02 Gameplay

Chinese Levels

Poetry stresses artistic conception. You should use the artistic conception of poetry as a clue to transform "poetry" and "painting" into each other, complete the incomplete picture and poetry, and form a harmonious and complete relationship between poetry and painting, so as to deepen the understanding of poetry.

Type-1: Complete paintings by using words in poems

O Geese by Luo Binwang

O geese, O geese, O geese!
You crane your neck and sing to sky your song sweet.
Your white feathers float on green water with ease.
You swim through clear waters with your red-webbed feet.

In this level, after reading the poem, you will detect what is empty in the painting (colors of the geese, feet and water) and then drag the Chinese characters that describe the missing parts of the picture (white, green and red) to the illustration.

Type-2: Complete poems by using items in paintings

The Folk Song of Tz'u Le (Handed down from the North-Dynasty)

By the side of the rill,
At the foot of the hill,
The grassland stretches' neath the firmament tranquil.
The boundless grassland lies
Beneath the boundless blue skies.
When the winds blow
And grass bends low,
My sheep and cattle will emerge before your eyes.

For example, in this level, you will find missing characters in the poem. You should find these missing items in the painting by understanding the poems meaning.

The missing items are sheep and cattle, which emerge when the winds blow, and the grass bends low. So only when you drag the character winds to the hill and see the grass bends will the sheep and cattle show up. After that, you can drag the sheep and cattle to the left blank in the poem, and you will see the characters sheep and cattle show up.

This level is a little bit hard because other than simply dragging items that already exist in the painting, players should understand the dynamic process of the poem and simulate it before they find the missing objects.

Type-3: Complete poems and paintings to simulate the poem plot

Sympathy for the peasants by Li Shen

Each seed when sown in spring,
will make autumn yields high.
What will fertile fields bring?
Of hunger peasants die.

The level Sympathy for the peasants expresses extremely directly the deep meaning of the poem that even though the peasants had lots of yields, they still died of hunger due to the governments squeezing.

You should drag seeds to the fields and wait for them to grow as rice. Then, drag the rice to the blank of the poem. But now, the puzzle is not figured out, as there are still two blurred characters.

In the meantime, you will see the landlord asked the peasants to hand in all his yields, and you have to drag all the rice to the officers place regardless of how miserably the peasant begged.

English Levels

Players convert existing items into words, then split and reassemble the words to generate new items to complete the puzzle.

Math Levels

1. Goal: Generate ideal function images by adjusting the parameters of the function and put them in proper places as tracks for the food(balls) to roll to the animals mouth(destinations).

2. Ball & Destination Types:

  • Ball: Gravity down / Destination: Fixed
  • Ball: Gravity up / Destination: Fixed
  • Ball: Gravity down / Destination: Gravity down

03 Main Improvement

Feedbacks for incorrect interaction

When players do incorrect interaction, there will still be feedbacks.

Interaction Feelings

Instead of dragging the letters in the spelling box, players now can spell the word just by clicking the letters in the word box. Also, when players put items in word box, the generated words will stay in slot, making it neat.

Story Clips

Our storytelling is basically accomplished through desktop arrangements and doodles in textbooks, gradually revealing the story of the textbook's owner without disrupting the player's gaming rhythm. You can see Xiaomu Wang, an energetic elementary school student who loves comics, always shows his whimsical ideas, life anecdotes, and youthful troubles in his textbook doodles.

04 Project Management

I created a real-time feedback tracking sheet, planned milestones, assigned tasks to individuals, and held progress review meetings every two weeks. This helped us move forward.

05 Feedbacks

We have posted some promotions on social media platforms such as Little Red Book and Bilibili, including teaser trailers, store page updates, and demo release invitations for trial play, which received thousands of views. We have also received feedback from players across various channels and were pleasantly surprised and moved to see that many players would record gameplay videos and upload them.

06 Take-home Messages

  1. Give players response and feedback to their every interaction can greatly increase the game feel.
  2. Watch player playing without interrupting benefits a lot, especially in guide design.
  3. For amateur project, its better to find proper develop pace for teammates. No too push, but still need contact in routine.
